KUCHING: A delegation from Sarawak will be sent to Lisbon, Portugal to study on carbon trading, particularly its functions and protocols, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said this is to facilitate Sarawak’s process of obtaining the new revenue source through carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS).

Sarawak had recently amended its State Land Code and Forest Ordinance to tap into carbon storage as well as carbon trading in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN).

Abang Johari said Sarawak is uniquely positioned to be a region where CCUS could be to their benefit due to geological factors.

“Sarawak is fortunate because it is one of the four areas in the world that has potentials to store carbon,” he said at a Singapore Business Delegation Networking Dinner at a leading hotel here last night (July 12).

The premier said the state is improving its already vast forest cover by planting seeds using drone technology.

He added, the world also recognises the state’s potential in carbon storage with many expressing their interests.

“South Korea has expressed interests in storing carbon in Sarawak and I said, ‘why not, but of course … there is a fee’,” he said in a jest.

At the same time, he also said Sarawak and Singapore can work together to identify solutions for global warming through mitigating carbon emissions.

“My government is giving emphasis and has formulated our strategic approach based on the challenges faced by the world today.

“One of the challenges is climate change and global warming that will bring about natural catastrophes”.
