By KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) must do its level best to attract the younger generation to join the party.
PBB deputy president Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas stressed that the party must make inroads to involve the youths.
“Undi18 has been implemented as of December (last year), they are going to be a big group (of voters), so what should we do? This generation is into internet and social media.
“For us in PBB, we must make sure that we invite them to join. If they are not Bumiputera, they can join our other components in Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
“If we don’t woo them, they will join other (opposition) parties. We must bring them to our progammes,” he said.
He said this during his address at PBB’s Triennial General Meeting (TGM) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today (June 17).
Uggah said PBB will be introducing an amendment to the party’s constitution to set up a new youth movement wing for those aged 18 to 28 years old.
“This is a directive of the Premier and party president – we must bring them (youth) in, involve them. The youths are part of us and they have a role to play. The future is theirs,” he said.
Separately, the deputy premier also commended the performance of the Women’s wing in the party.
“They are very committed and unrelenting – in my constituency, I can just call them (to attend a function), without needing to fund travel expenses.
“That is their spirit in the Women wing, the loyalty and the commitment within the party – this is important,” he said.
At the same time, Uggah also stressed that PBB has to be wary of threats on social media as it contributed to the downfall of the Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government.
“We must counter these false allegations and fake news – this is how they want to bring us down. So, we must, rebut these allegations. We can and we have done it,” he said.
