KUCHING: Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abang Ahmad Urai Abang Mohideen has passed away. He was 89.

He breathed his last at 12.30am this morning at Normah Medical Centre in Kuching.

His personal assistant confirmed news of his passing when contacted by Bernama.

“Tan Sri was rushed to the Normah Medical Centre after he collapsed while attending a function at a hotel (in Kuching). He died at 12.30 am today.

“His body will be taken to his residence in Jalan Muda Hashim this morning,” she said.

The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) veteran was Senate president from 1988 to 1990 succeeding Tan Sri Benedict Stephens. He was previously Senate Deputy Speaker from 1985 to 1987.

He was in the senate from 1984 and prior to that, served in the state government for more than 18 years holding various ministerial posts.

In Oct last year, Abang Ahmad Urai was conferred the Darjah Utama Yang Amat Mulia Bintang Kenyalang Sarawak Datuk Amar Bintang Kenyalang (DA) which carries the title ‘Datuk Amar’ in conjunction with the 85th birthday of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
