KUCHING: The polling day for the 15th General Election will be on Nov 19 which falls on a Saturday.
This was announced by the Election Commission (EC) following a meeting on the coordination of GE15 today.
EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh said the date for the issuing of election writ is today (Oct 20) while the nomination day is on Nov 5 and early voting is on Nov 15.
“The EC has held a Special Meeting today and decided that a 15th GE should be held to fill the vacancies of 222 Dewan Rakyat seats, as well as 42 Pahang State Assembly seats, 15 Legislative Assembly seats Perlis State, and 59 Perak State Assembly seats.
“At the same time, the DUN N.66 Bugaya, Sabah by-election will also be held simultaneously to fill the vacant seat,” he said in a statement today.
Abdul Ghani said the campaign period is set at 14 days after nomination on Nov 5 until 11.59pm on Nov 18 which is the day before polling.
The EC chairman said the electoral roll used for GE15 and the Bugaya by-election is latest until Oct 9 which consisted of 21,173,683 voters.
He said application for postal voting has been opened from Oct 10 for GE15 and on Oct 13 for the Bugaya by-election in Sabah.
For election workers, EC members, police, army and media personnel, the closing date for the application is on Nov 2, while for citizens residing outside of Malaysia is on Oct 23 while agencies and organisations is on Oct 26.
The EC chairman said the commission has appointed a total of 222 returning officers and 1,264 assistant returning officers. He said a total of 363,515 election workers will be appointed to assist in the election process.
“For the purposes of monitoring campaign activities, the EC has set up 625 campaign enforcement teams which comprised the police, local authorities and representatives of the contesting candidates,” he said.
