KUCHING: 37-year-old Syed Hamzah Datuk Wan Hamid Edruce, a Pelawan deputy branch chief of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) made history, being the youngest to be elected to the party’s Supreme Council.
In a statement following his win, he said while some might view that his decision to contest in the Supreme Council race was “against the norm”, he said it is a testament to the democracy practised by the party.
“I hope that my presence in this Supreme Council will give a positive image to the PBB as it shows that the delegates are very open to a young and fresh candidate.
“Certainly, the youths out there are watching this development especially when our party is in the process of setting up a special wing for youths,” he said today (June 19).
Syed Hamzah said the announcement of the new Supreme Council lineup is even sweeter as on the same day, the party amended its constitution to set up a new wing for members aged 18 to 28 years old.
Besides him, 15 others from PBB Bumiputera wing were also elected. Among them are Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Datuk Abdullah Saidol, Razi Sitam, Razaili Gapor, Haidar Khan Asghar Khan, Mohammed Kamaruddin Mohamad Effendie and Mohamad Duri.
Also elected were Safiee Ahmad, Awangku Jinal Pengiran Jawa, Yusuf Abdul Wahab, Mohamad Sardon Zainal, Awla Dris, Aidel Lariwoo and Datuk Juanda Jaya.
Syed Hamzah said the perception of young people finding it difficult to get a place in PBB is now proving to be untrue.
“We managed to prove this time that the PBB has young people who are in the ranks of its Supreme Council Members.
“To all those who have been willing to oppose me in this election, I would like to thank you a million times. For those who did not vote for me, this is a clear message to me that I need to work hard to introduce myself to the members of the PBB.
“I also need to prove I am consistent in conveying the voice of the grassroots to the top leadership of the party,” he said. – Think Sarawak
