KUCHING: The outcome of the Sarawak government’s research into producing aviation fuel based on algae will be known within the next six months.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the study is done to gauge the commercial viability of the product.

“We are now looking into whether the biofuel that is produced from this renewable source (algae) can be commercialised.

“We are now conducting research and its outcome will only be known within the next six months,” he said. He was speaking to reporters when met after officiating at the Sarawak Education Expo today (June 25).

Abang Johari said if the biofuel is commercially viable and can be produced in high volume, only then would its production be scaled up.

“From that aspect, we can produce a biofuel which is used by airplanes as aviation fuel,” he added.

Last month, the Sarawak government was exploring sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to sustainably produce jet fuel that will contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions.

At the same time, the premier said Sarawak needs to produce more experts from niche areas through its education system.

“We need more people from the science background. Today we are talking about algae, but at the same time we are also into producing hydrogen as well as looking into sour gas.

“This is why we need to develop our workforce and have human capital from the science field where we can tackle climate change,” he said.

Abang Johari said at the same time, the state needs graduates who are in social science and human resource besides providing the others training in science.

“At the same time, we will continue to add value to our resources. Our future is bright if we can continue to produce competent professionals in these fields,” he said.
