By KUCHING: The Sarawak government is setting up two more development agencies to spur development in Rajang Delta and Betong.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the current development agencies set up in the state has been instrumental in developing the areas involved.
“In other words, there is focus (on development) as this uses a bottom-up approach rather than top down.
“We listen to the people’s request and integrate them into development plans. This too will contribute to the social evolution of the society,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after delivering his winding up speech at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Triennial General Meeting (PBB) today (June 19).
Abang Johari said the development agencies are needed in rural areas as the role of planning for development in urban areas are already shouldered by city councils and others.
“These development agencies (in Rajang Delta and Betong) will exclude urban areas,” he said.
The premier said the impact of development agencies is for all to see in Greater Kuching including Serian, Bau as well as part of Lundu.
“So, I see that the strategy is positive as it not only spurs physical development but also the development of human capital,” he said.
At the same time, Abang Johari said Sarawak given its relatively small population, has experienced rapid economic development.
“This includes digitalisation and manufacturing based on the state’s resource. There will be a lot of downstream manufacturing based on oil and gas,” he said.
He added, these activities will require ample workforce, adding that the opportunities are there for men and women in Sarawak to be involved.
“We are a small region and we need everyone who has the necessary talent to help develop our state,” he said.
The premier also added that the PBB TGM has been an eye opener for the government to pursue new economy
“We will try to achieve what has been laid out in Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 203. We are fortunate we have a strong team under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to transform the state,” he said.
