KUCHING: Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has taken Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) and its contractors to task over poor maintenance of drainage in the area.
He was disappointed with the “neglect” of the council on the matter as well as sub-par works of the maintenance contractors.
Alluding to the number of complaints received by his service centre and visiting the drainage site, he said it is “painfully obvious” that the quality of work done did not meet expectations.
“The locals couldn’t remember when was the last time dredging work was carried out – with so much mud, sediment, industrial waste and garbage,” he said in a Facebook post on Sunday (June 12).
Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP, was also displeased over the handling of complaints on the drainage by the council, describing it as the worst he’d seen throughout his years in politics.
“If the scope of the contractor’s responsibility is too large to effectively handle the maintenance and dredging work, why did the SMC simply ignore it, rather than conducting reviews to find ways to improve the quality of service for the people?
“They must review the performance of the contractors, and whether they meet the people’s needs. The SMC and contractor’s excuses are just inexcusable; they cannot simply be allowed to treat the people’s issues so irresponsibly,” he said
At the same time, Tiong also urged the council to hold dialogues with factory owners on waste disposal as supervision is needed to prevent drains from being clogged.
“They should not allow these factories free rein to do as they please. Without any maintenance and supervision, the environmental quality of the entire area is going down the drain,” he said.
He also reiterated his advice to civil servants in Sibu during the election period where they must not ignore complaints.
“It is time for you to wake up and do your work; you should be ashamed for letting past complaints go unresolved,” he said.
